Irish championship at Mondello

The fourth round of the Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Championship, and the first Rallycross event of 2012, took place at Mondello Park on Sunday where George Tracey maintained his unbeaten run in the series and guided his Citroën Xsara Supercar to victory. John Kelly (Mitsubishi Lancer) chased Tracey home in both the Supercar A final and the Superfinal in which third, fourth and fifth places were taken by the top three from the Supernational A final. This had been a rather drawn out affair that needed two restarts and eventually delivered just three finishers. Ian O’Connell again dominated the class in his Lotus Exige, heading Willie Coyne and Dessie Tierney. Stock Hatch 16 stars Graeme Colfer and Eddie Peterson both made it to the Superfinal, Peterson placing sixth while Colfer failed to finish.
Elsewhere on the day, Don Shannon won the Supernational B final in his Volvo S40, Gordon Lynch returned to Stock Hatch action in Derek Tohill’s 16v Peugeot 106, Noel O’Brien won again in the 8v Stock Hatch category, the Junior A final was won by James Fleming who kept his Toyota Starlet ahead of the Nissan Micra runners and Fergus Lynch used his ex-Tohill Honda to win the RallyCar class.
