WMSC ratifies ERC changes

In its final meeting of 2011 the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) approved proposals from the Off-Road Commission to amend rules for the European Rallycross Championship.

Information published after the WMSC meeting which took place in New Delhi, India, on Wednesday December 7, stated: “In the interest of cost reduction and equality among competitors, it is confirmed that one engine and two turbos are permitted to be used in each event qualifying for the 2012 FIA European Rallycross Championship. Any breach will incur a drop of eight places on the ranking obtained before the start of the Finals, in which eight drivers are now permitted to take part in A, B and C-Finals.”

What this rather bland statement means is that the proposal to limit engine use has been approved and that from the start of the 2012 season, drivers will be moved eight places down the qualifying order should they change an engine during the course of an event. The engine rule applies to all three classes, Supercar further restricted to the use of two turbochargers per event, the penalty for exceeding this again eight places in the qualifying order.

The other proposal mentioned is that concerning the formation of the finals. These will increase in grid size  from six to eight cars. This means that 20 drivers will progress to the finals, although with no change in points allocation, there will still be 16 points scorers. The top six will qualify for the A final, the next six for the B and the next eight for the C final. The first two finishers in each of the C and B finals will progress to the next final.
