No silver lining

Faulty liners lead to engine failure and keep Hunsbedt away from Portugal.

Nomaco Racing has withdrawn from this weekend’s second round of the European Rallycross Championship following the failure of one of the engines for its Volvo C30 on the dyno. The decision of the Norwegian team will also deprive the event of a star name, Ludvig Hunsbedt now pinning his hopes on further dyno tests and the supply of new components before next weekend’s third round of the series in France.

“The engine was down on power at Lydden in round one where we could only achieve 1.6kg boost pressure instead of the usual 2.8kg,” said Hunsbedt who explained that dyno tests had determined the engine had lost 100-150bhp, “During the tests the cylinder block cracked and when the engine was stripped it turned out that the problem had been caused by a problem with the liners. It’s regrettable that problems like this happen, but the positive is that we know what is wrong,” said Hunsbedt.

Nomaco’s absence from the Portuguese event weakens an already slender entry list and takes the expected number of Supercar starters down to 19. The Super1600 field contained 18 starters when the organising CAVR published entries, while there were just eight drivers listed in the TouringCar category, the minimum necessary for it to attract championship points.
