21 January Race of Champions announces that it will run its next event at Pite Havsbad in the north of Sweden. Scheduled for January 2022, the event is planned to be run on a frozen area of the Baltic sea with the organisers committing to run the event in safe conditions even if the COVID pandemic and its associated restrictions continue. ROC has agreed a long-term agreement to run a snow and ice event at Pite Havsbad with the venue remaining in place after the event for commercial use. The event plans “…to include some of the most exciting electric race cars in competition on the road to being a fully sustainable and carbon-neutral event.” To launch the event Johan Kristoffersson drove an RX2 car on a frozen venue.
22 January The new FIA RX2e championship opens its registration process. Restricted to a maximum of 20 places in its first season, RX2e is an ‘arrive-and-drive’ series for one-make electric racecars.
