10 December Motorsport UK, the British ASN, announces the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship coordinator Jordine Crooks as its Volunteer of the Year. “I feel extremely honoured and shocked to have been nominated as Volunteer of the Year, let alone win it! I attended my first motorsport event at three days old and have continued to enjoy it ever since, be that as a spectator, competitor or organiser. To be able to give something back to a sport which moulded my childhood is a pleasure, and I feel extremely proud and privileged to be part of clubman motorsport. 2020 has certainly been a challenge, as it has for many, but the organisation of our events and championship has provided a welcome distraction, albeit a time-consuming one! We have seen clubs, drivers, volunteers and officials adapt to the new COVID-19 guidance to keep the sport we all love alive and I must thank Motorsport UK for their efforts in producing this guidance. All volunteers involved in motorsport are deserving of recognition, more so this year than ever, and I certainly couldn’t fullfil my role without the help of several others, thank you to all involved,” said Crooks.
16 December Ollie O’Donovan reveals plans to build a new Supercar based on the Proton Iriz. Irishman O’Donovan is aiming to race the car in British, European and World Rallycross Championship events in 2021. Based on the Proton Iriz Rally 2 [R5] car, O’Donovan’s car will be a new build specifically for rallycross and is being constructed by rallycross specialist Tony Bardy Motorsport in collaboration with Mellors Elliot Motorsport which has led the design and development of the Proton Iriz rally car. “When we built the Iriz R5 originally, we had in the back of our mind that we might like to do some rallycross, so it was a bit over-engineered in some areas from the start. We’re very excited, both Ollie and Tony have vast rallycross experience and it’s great to have a collaboration for this project to see what we can achieve together,” said Chris Mellors, Proton Motorsport Team Principal.
O’Donovan revealed that the impetus to choose the Proton came from the desire to do something different. “The easy option would have been to buy a car from the World Championship, but we wanted to do something different, to stand out from the crowd. I’ve worked with Tony for a very long time now and he is one of the best in the business. Linking his experience of rallycross with the expertise of MEM in the cooperation we’ve put together is a hugely exciting prospect,” he said. Car builder Bardy added that getting the engine right would be critical: “The Iriz has already done lots of rallies and proved the concept, so as long as we can get comparable power from the engine to what we have now, which I’m sure we can, I see no reason why we can’t be right where we want to be,” he said.
