Toomas Heikkinen will take part in the Kittee Rallysprint in Finland in January. GRC champion Heikkinen drove a Super2000 Fiesta in the event last year and will repeat the exercise in 2014 but also plans to extend his outings and drive in several more rallysprints during the winter. The Kittee event is run close to Heikkinen’s home town of Joensuu and an event that he also took part in early in his career. “It’s quite a special event for me, because this is where it all began. So as well as being good fun, it’s also really good practice for me to stay sharp for rallycross, with a bit of competition over the winter. The Super2000 car obviously doesn’t have anything like the same amount of power as my rallycross car, but the handling is absolutely fantastic and the whole car is incredibly reactive. I’m really looking forward to having this experience again: it’s going to be a nice way to start the year,” he said. Heikkinen and his management at V&V are continuing to pursue options for the 2014 season and
The last rallycross champion to be crowned in 2013 collected his title at Mondello Park last Sunday when Andrew Morris completed a good season in the Irish championship to secure the series for the first time. Ahead of the event it had been decided that the overall Irish title would be settled in a sudden-death Superfinal at the last round, theoretically leaving the title open to all drivers, including the defending champ Ian O’Connell. Driving his new Subaru Impreza, Morris held off the challenge from John Kelly’s Mitsubishi Lancer to win the the Supercar A final and progress to the Superfinal. The title decider was a repeat performance, Kelly chasing hard all the way, but Morris holding on to win again and take the crown. Derrick Jobb contested the event with his Escort, netting a pair of third places ahead of Greg Kalinecki’s Lancia Delta. O’Connell ended his year as champion with yet another Supernational win, the Lotus driver the class champion. Younger brother Gavin placed third in his Fiesta, Pearse Browne second in his BMW Compact. Eoin Murray (Peugeot 106) took 16v Stock Hatch honours on a day when his father Joe had a rare outing and placed second in the eight-valve B final with a Honda Civic, the best of the three Civics in the field. Noel O’Brien won the eight-valve A final and Sophie Byrne was best of the Juniors. Rallycross will return to Blyton Park Driving Centre in 2014, the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship scheduled to run three events on a new 950 metre course at the Lincolnshire venue. The new track has been conceived to cater for club events and is due to be used for the first time in the series opener in February.
