TouringCar is here to stay

TouringCar will continue to feature in the FIA European Rallycross Championship. That is the clear message from championship promoter IMG today.

On the eve of this final round of the championship, stories circulated to effect that the TouringCar class was living on borrowed time. With the 2014 championship being formed, and with TouringCar and Super1600 both having a firm place in the series for the foreseeable future, suggestions that the FIA was about to cut the class were met with a firm statement of fact.

“The classes that form the championships cannot be changed without our consent. Any change also needs input from the Technical Working Group and neither of those has been sought,” said Martin Anayi, MD of RallycrossRX at IMG. TouringCar and Super1600 will continue to have full FIA European championships in 2014 but each may run over a shorter calendar in a move to reduce travel costs and make the series more attractive to a wider group of competitors.

Introduced at the beginning of the current financial crisis in Europe, and without an existing base of eligible cars, TouringCar has been slower to grow than was the Super1600 class but has now gained solid roots, particularly in the Nordic countries.
