Irish championship at Mondello Park

John Kelly won the second round of the Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park on Sunday. The Mitsubishi Lancer racer finished ahead of the Ford Fiesta of Declan Kelly and now shares the lead of the series with round one winner Greg Kalinecki.
Ian O’Connell battled hard with European championship star Derek Tohill but stayed just ahead in the Supernational final in which Willie Coyne placed third from Padraig Leeson and George Tohill’s BMW Compact. Circuit racer Eoin Murray returned to Stock Hatch and won the 16v class ahead of Eddie Peterson while title holder Noel O’Brien opened his season with victory in the eight-valve class. There was further success for Junior front runner Sophie Byrne who won the A final in his Nissan Micra, James Huddleston and Dylan Curley joining her on the podium. The new Kart Cross class made its debut and was won by Ian Barrett while Tom Curley topped the order among the rally cars in his Subaru Impreza.
