Belgian Championship at Duivelsberg

Koen Pauwels (Touringcars) and Kristof Bex (Supernationals +2000) secured the Belgian Rallycross title in the penultimate round of the Belgian Rallycross Championship. Jos Kuypers (Supercars), Davy van den Branden (Super1600) and Piedro Cokelaere (Supernational -2000) had to wait until the finals.

In the Supercars it was local driver Jochen Coox (VW Scirocco) who took an early lead in the race and a few minutes later, Coox booked his first win in his Scirocco. Not only a win for the Scirocco-driver but also pole position in the A-final. Coox had a superb start and led the eight car A-final grid direct from the start with on his tail de Ford Focus of Jos Kuypers, the Subaru Impreza of Patrick van Mechelen and Koen Pauwels, who drove in this last race for the Belgian Championship a new Ford Focus. Coox dove into the Jokerlap, for a moment it looked if the victory would slipped out of his hands. Kuypers made an error at the up going of the Duivelsberg. Ronny Scheveneels, driving a Peugeot 207 from Jean-Luc Pailler and Ron Snoeck could both not avoid the Focus of Kuypers. The three blocked the track. Jos Jansen however saw a small gap on the inside and ‘forced’ his way and passed Scheveneels, Snoeck and Kuypers. The damage on the right front wheel of the Peugeot of Scheveneels and the tyre marks on the hood of the Fiesta of Kuypers tells the story.

Meanwhile at the front Coox was flying over the Duivelsberg with on his tail the Subaru of Van Mechelen, who delivered another good performance with the Impreza, which is now for sale. Next year Van Mechelen is racing the 2012 Ford Fiesta of Dutchman Jos Kuypers. Koen Pauwels climbed up to third place at he podium. Jos Jansen fourth and the Dutch drivers, Wil Teurlings (Volvo S40), Jos Kuypers (Ford Fiesta) and Ron Snoeck (Seat Leon), fifth, sixth and seventh. Kuypers scored enough points to take the Belgian Championship title across the border. For Kuypers it is his eight Belgian Championship.

Dennis Remans won the race in the Super1600. It was Davy van den Branden who took the glory by winning the Championship in the Super1600. With an explosion of joy took the Belgian title home. “This was a very, very hard season”, said Van den Branden. The Citroën C2 came home after the European event in Buxtehude with severe engine problems. “It was close. Very close to get the car ready for this race. The team worked very hard and we had all the luck of the world that the spare parts where available with our suppliers. Until yesterday we were not sure if we could race here. Now it’s party time”, said a very happy Super1600 Belgian Champion. In the A-final both Dutch drivers, Marcel Snoeyers (Renault Clio) and Peter van de Wege (Toyota Yaris) eliminated themselves in the first corner. Dave van Beers struggled trough the event with some technical problems on his Renault Clio. Van Beers had before the last race of the season the best papers in his hands for the Belgian title. Van Beers (Renault Clio) finished third in the race and second in the Super1600 Championship only 1 point behind Championship winner Davy van den Branden.

With Touringcar Champion Koen Pauwels absent victory went to Louis de Haas (Opel Astra) before Mandy Kasse and Nick Snoeys. In the Super Nationals -2000cc the leader in the ranking, Steven Stessens (Vauxhall Nova) was forced by technical problems to leave his racing car in the paddock. Pedro Cokelaere took the victory i this class and the is the Belgian Supernational -2000 champion. The Super Nationals 2000cc+ was a one-man show of European driver, Michaël de Keersmaecker in a Volvo 242. From start to finish he lead the race. Two of De keersmaecker’s ‘biggest’ opponents, 2013 Supernational Champion Kristof Bex and David van Nijlen saw there race stopped in the sandtrap of the first corner.
