Nudge and spin
by Tim Whittington |
It looked like a repeat performance of the first heat; Tanner Foust had knocked the times set by the rest into a cocked hat and Timur Timerzyanov was on a mission in the last race of the heat. Then it all changed; the Russian ran his Citroën DS3 over the big kerb in the gravel turn at the bottom of the hill in the Lånkbanen and spun out of the race with broken front suspension. It looked as though the race had been gifted to the chasing Liam Doran but second later his D3 ploughed off the road with broken steering. Foust’s opposition had evaporated and he ended the heat with fastest time over Mats Lysen and Stig-Olov Walfridson, the Renault pair helped out by the retirement of the Citroëns. Stein Egil Jenssen, Michael De Keersmaecker and Camilla Antonsen also fell victim to breakages in driveline and suspension; the combination of the kerbs and a couple of holes in the bottom corner taking their toll.

Super1600 racer Robert Aamodt and TouringCar’s Lars Rosendahl also went out after running over the kerb in the bottom turn which was the scene of Jan Gabrielsen’s demise; his Mazda RX8 pushed into a spin by Kim Steinsholt who was disqualified from the heat. It was close again at the top of Super1600 but Andreas Bakkerud looked perfectly composed as he set fastest time and wrote his name on pole position for the A final. Lars Øivind Enerberg began his fight back from the first day’s troubles with fastest time among the TouringCar racers.
