Abbott and MCM ‘surprised and disappointed’

RallycrossWorld.com asked Michael Crawford Motorsport’s PJ Abbott for a response to the news that Frode Holte was bringing his car back to Europe and would not drive in the 2012 GRC. Abbott says that he is surprised and disappointed at Holte’s decision, adding that he had repeatedly tried to contact Holte but had received no response until the Norwegian unexpectedly showed up to collect his car. Abbott also maintains that Holte knew, in the original agreement, he was due to act as coach and mentor to the team and was not scheduled to drive until 2013, and that the offer to be the main driver was made after Holte had visited the team in December.

“We had no idea what was happening,” said Abbott. “MCM is supportive of the decision for Frode Hotle to return to EU. We recognise his talent, and will always allow an opportunity for Frode if and when he feels the timing and situation meet his expectations. We at MCM understand that many things in life can change and influence direction and wish Frode the best in his endeavours. We believe in Frode, and consider him a true talent. Our staff invested significant time, money and resources to introduce Frode to the USA fan base.”

On the specific claim by Holte that the contract he received was not what he expected following negotiations, Abbott said: “In January, following the December visit and decision for Frode to drive, MCM was asked to provide a ‘draft’ for review. The ‘draft’ was provided on January 20 as work continued on the car. We were expecting feedback and negotiations. We do not wish to fight, spend any energy, on this topic. We apologise to the racing community and look forward to the 2012 GRC season. We did not release a statement, thinking that Frode may wish to discuss options, and were surprised with the actions of the past 48 hours. We continue to offer Frode an opportunity and even today as the car is still in USA are willing to work with him. We have had over 20 calls from drivers, agents, and teams since the rumours started two days ago, and as of this morning have not actively engaged in a single call. We have had no communication from Frode,” said Abbott who was not yet able to say how he will now pursue plans to compete in the Global Rallycross Championship.
