Looking for Einar Sande
by Tim Whittington |
Austrian Porsche specialist Dr. Georg Konradsheim is looking for information and photographs about Norwegian Rallycross pioneer and Suzuki importer Einar Sande and the 2.7 RS 911 he raced in the second half of the 1970s.
Based at Vösendorf close to Vienna, Konradsheim is rebuilding the ex-Sande 911 and wants to put together the history of a car that has clearly had a long and varied life. As you can see from the photographs, the car is being returned to its original production specification and, remarkably, appears to show no signs that it was ever used in competition, let alone the scars of rough and tumble 1970s Rallycross.
Sande’s period of participation in Rallycross predates even that of our own Eddi Laumanns, at least in his professional role as a snapper. The “Rallycross Guru” is sure, however, that, somewhere in the depths of his archive, there are at least some black and white pictures of Sande from the 1978 season. We do, however, know that Sande was among the first Norwegians to drive regularly in Rallycross, venturing to international events along with his fellow Porsche-driving compatriots Per Engseth and Arne Stenshorne and that he appears to have ended his ten-year motor sport career by racing the 911 in Rallycross during 1976, ’77 and ’78. Prior to this, we know that he used to drive BMW 2002 and Ford Escorts in ice racing and hillclimb events events in Norway. As his most important achivements one can rate his 1972 Norwegian ice racing championship title with Ford Escort as well as the 1978 Norwegian Rallycross title (D2/GT) with the pictured Porsche 911.
We do not believe that Sande is still alive, but Konradsheim is keen to make contact with the Norwegian’s family or friends, or anyone who may have photographs of the car when Sande owned it. If you have information that would help, you can contact Konradsheim here.
