Scott takes Route 93 to USA

Andy Scott and Per Eklund have teamed up to form Scott-Eklund Racing which will enter two Saab 93 Supercars in the Global Rallycross Championship. Scott will drive one of the cars in the GRC campaign, the news says that it has ‘had a lot of interest in the second car from several European and American drivers’.

The move comes on the back of Scott’s first year in the European Rallycross Championship, the Scotsman placing 11th at the end of the year, a result that he admitted was better than he had ever expected, and which was achieved with the help of two A final appearances including a third place finish in Holland.

“It’s an honour to be teaming up with one of the legends of our sport,” said Scott. “Per’s years of experience racing all over the world will be invaluable to the team while of course the Saab 93 has a proven pedigree, especially in Per’s hands. Being part of a new series in the USA which is sure to grow on a global scale is very exciting. But with such an unrivalled pedigree of drivers already confirmed, without doubt it will be a challenging year. Regardless, we have the passion and the expertise in place to really make an impact in the States and months of planning is finally coming to fruition.”

At the end of the 2011 season Scott and Eklund teamed up when the Swedish veteran took part in the British Rallycross Grand Prix driving Scott’s Peugeot 306 Supercar. Former European champion, Eklund ran one of his 93s in America at the end of 2010, winning the final round of the inaugural US Rallycross Championship at New Jersey Motorsports Park with Toomas Heikkinen at the wheel.

“I’ve competed all across the world on every level, and I can see that the Global Rallycross Championship will be fantastic,” said Eklund. “Of course, it will be a tough new challenge but with the TV exposure and link with the X Games there is great potential for the future, particularly to raise the profile of Rallycross on a global scale. I have done everything and raced everywhere. Now it’s time for something new. I went to some of the GRC events last year and learnt a lot, so I know what’s going on. The driver entry list is unbelievable so the level of competition will be really strong but we already have a fantastic team package in place and I expect Andy to create quite a stir in the United States.”
