Race Of Austrian Champions at Greinbach

Today one week ago the PS Racing Center at Greinbach in Austria saw the first edition of an end-of-season special tagged as ‘Race Of Austrian Champions’. The knock-out format event, that should be organised every year from now on, featured six different classes: Rallycross 2WD and 4WD machinery, Rally 2WD and 4WD cars as well as Autocross 2WD and 4WD specials. Apart from leading Austrian motorsport stars German venue sponsor René Münnich and his fiancé Mandie August were notable foreigners on the entry list, but did not show up.

Master of the house Christian Petrakovits had to throw his towel into the Greinbach Rallycross ring already during the first runs, the engine of his Super1600 VW Polo IV started to produce bad noise and forced the son of PS Racing Center principal Erich Petrakovits to give up early. His Rallycross colleague from Melk, ARC runner-up Jürgen Weiß did not come much further. The Wachauring organiser lost a drive-shaft of his Ford Focus I Supercar and had to watch the remains of the event as a spectator.

In the Rallycross 2WD category the last race saw Patrick Breiteneder (Group N Honda Civic) winning from Sven Förster. Förster raced his usual VW Golf all day, but for the final was entrusted with the Super1600 MG Rover ZR of 1996 European 1400 Cup winner Manfred Beck as the gearbox of his Volkswagen broke at the end of the previous half-final. The final of the Rallycross 4WD event was won by Peter Ramler and his Seat Leon from Austrian Hillclimb ace Felix Pailer with an XXL size version Lancia Delta integrale.
