Eklund gets GP Peugeot

Per Eklund will race in next weekend’s British Rallycross Grand Prix at Croft, the veteran Swede claiming that the event, in which he will drive Andy Scott’s Peugeot 306 Supercar, will be ‘something new’ for him.

“I’ve never done a Rallycross where I can just show up with my helmet and drive the car, I always had to have my own car for Rallycross so this is something new,” said the 65-year-old who has cut back on his own racing activities in the last two years as he concentrates on running his team and his young Finnish protégé Toomas Heikkinen. The ‘arrive and drive’ arrangement is not the only novelty in store for Eklund at Croft, he will also have to relearn right-hand drive. “It’s a f****** long time since I drove in the right side. I can’t remember when, it would be a rally, perhaps one of the African ones – I don’t know. It’s just a car, I learned to drive on the right before so I can do it again. I’m really looking forward to drive that Peugeot because I’ve raced against it a lot – and crashed into it a few times! – It was always a really good car and I know that Tony Bardy made a lot of improvements and updates for Andy so it’s interesting to drive it,” said Eklund.

The Swede is the highest profile of the slim foreign entry in the event and will join Finnish racer Silvo Viitanen in the 17-strong Supercar category while Jos Sterkens will run his TouringCar Volvo C30 in the Supernational class.
