FIA CEZ trophy at Fuglau

The final rounds of the FIA Central European Zone Rallycross Trophy series as well as the Austrian Rallycross Championship were held at the Nordring at Fuglau near the Austrian town of Horn on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October. While the title aspirant of both series, Jürgen Weiß, had a mixed weekend with lots of bad luck and eventually got stuck in the B final, both the event victory and the Austrian title went to Alois Höller. However, the A final start of Ford Focus campaigner Höller was pretty fishy and will remain controversial for quite some time… Runner-up in the event was Hungarian Zoltán Harsányi, who thereby claimed the FIA CEZ trophy of the Supercar category from Höller, leaving Weiß with nothing to celebrate.

Hungarian Zsolt Orzság drove his Suzuki Ignis Sport to twice the fastest times in the first and second qualifying runs to sit the third heat out. Here it was Czech Václav Veverka Jr. who marked the best time to join Orzság in the first row of the Super1600 A final grid. After the GO of the last race it was the Czech Peugeot driver who took the lead, subsequently leaving the Suzuki campaigner no chance to overtake. However, the second place ensured the Hungarian the Austrian S1600 title, the CEZ trophy had been won by non-starter Pole Krzysztof Skorupski already prior to the Fuglau event.

Although Patrick Breiteneder, son of the late Rallycross legend Herbert Breiteneder, had won the TouringCar class of all five [of a total of eight] attended ARC rounds it was Mazda RX-8 pilot Sepp Strobl who claimed the Austrian title as well as the CEZ trophy. Among the many SuperNational contenders it was homeboy Klaus Freudenthaler who dominated the qualification, but leading the A final the Seat man all in a sudden found himself without his left rear-wheel. With Freundenthaler out of the game the remaining laps became somewhat messy. Czech Roman Častoral was black-flagged for leaving the track with all wheels as well as being accused of careless driving. After the Opel campaigner went berserk and protested against his disqualifikation the officials buckled and the former European champion was subsequently reinstated in the results and declared the overall winner… While Častoral had the Austrian SN title already safe in his pocket prior to Fuglau the CEZ trophy fell prey to his compatriot Tomáš Hurt.
