FIA NEZ championship at Riga

Oja, Frøshaug, Svartås and Mortensen winning their classes.

Just one week after round 1 in Lithuania round 2 of the FIA Northern European Zone Rallycross Championship was held at the Biķernieki Sport Complex at the Latvian capital city of Riga. While the Sunday before Norwegian Rallycross lady and reigning NEZ 4WD champion Camilla Antonsen had been able to win from Estonian Sten Oja this time it was the other way round, the Mitsubishi driver claimed the victory and the Ford campaigner became runner-up. The NEZ Open category here fell once again prey to Norwegian Volvo man Ola Frøshaug, his BMW driving compatriot Erik Svartås made the NEZ 2000 class victory his, and the young Dane Søren Mortensen drove his Citroën to his first success.

The by about 3,500 spectators attended event was organised by the Rallycross drivers Uģis Pauriņš and Ilgonis Krūmiņš, who both also competed in the NEZ 2000 [Pauriņš] and NEZ Open [Krūmiņš] classes over the weekend. Especially the latter became very exhausted, as he did the track maintenance on board of his earthwork Caterpillar additionally to his racing activities.

Norwegian Volvo campaigner Egil Iversen had a big crash with his SuperNational 240 in practice, but refused to give in. After less than two hours the badly damaged car was back for business again, the whole Norwegian mechanics power had united to show its efficiency. Our Danish contributor Jørgen Ring-Andersen (Rallycross-info.dk) counted no less than 17 hard working people around the car…
