Jump practice

X Games racers get first shot at the ‘gap jump’.

X Games is a big circus in the best American way! Friday daytime was a quiet day for the rally and Rallycross section of the event, but Friday night ended with a jump-training for all participants.

We could also begin to see the outlines of a rallycross track take shape in LA’s main streets during the day.  The organizers have done a great job and created a challenging and tight track, that will be very exciting while also extending over quite a large area. “Here you need to use the inside of the track, there is no room for mistakes, a hard crash will put you out for the weekend for sure. They have put a lot of money into making this a show, and it will be interesting to see how it goes,” said Rallycross legend Kenneth Hansen, here with his team to run Liam Doran’s Citroën C4.

Friday’s jump training was an exciting moment. Some drivers gathered at the top of the jump for a last discussion, and review.  A speed of around 50-55mph was recommended. David Moro was the first man over in his Subaru, and it all looked very undramatic.
Dave Mirra was the next man, and then they followed one after another. Almost all made three jumps. One of those to hit problems was Michael Jernberg who got problems with the steering on his Skoda after the first jump. “All power in the servo disappeared, but it is okay for tomorrow,” Jernberg said. Liam Doran gave everything, but said the jump was less exciting than it was at the last GRC during the event in Pikes Peak. -“This is simple, you could almost do it with the rental car!”  he said after practice.

After practice was completed, the workers started to change one of LA’s main streets into a starting grid, and in the morning it will be a complete Rallycross track.
